Last Day Tram Allocations
An initial list of the tramcars available for the last day was published by the Tramway & Light Railway Society in "Tramfare" as the result of various requests.
More information has since been found as more photographs, taken on that day, emerge, (George Atkins' help was particularly appreciated).
So the opportunity is now taken to give the May 2007 update below.
Column A gives the licensed car's number.
Column B shows the allocated depot - AW Abbey Wood - NX New Cross.
Column C confirms whether or not the "Last Tram Week" poster was carried cc N no - P hirer's own poster - Y yes.
Column D shows the service or hire (charter) on which the car was photographed - IABS Ian Allan bus spotters club - IPF Infantile Paralysis Fund (charity) - LRTL Light Railway Transport League (now LRTA) - OS Omnibus Society.
Should you be interested in the Metropolitan Stage Carriage plate carried by each licensed car, a list of final numbers issued was compiled by A. J. Wills as Appendix C of "London Transport Tramways" by E R Oakley and C E Holland (still available).
There were two other operations that day but involving unlicensed cars. In the morning Wheel Carrier 011 made its last journey, going to Penhall Road. While in the afternoon, Charlton CRD's staff car 2055 gave a farewell run for members of its original owners, Walthamstow Council. The works staff had decorated it and finally gave it their own send-off from CRD on the short distance to Penhall Road yard.
